No flood protection for B478 Playhatch Road

A BID for funding to protect a busy road from flooding has been rejected.

A BID for funding to protect a busy road from flooding has been rejected.

Oxfordshire County Council asked the Government to pay for the work on the B478 Playhatch Road in Sonning, which was damaged when the Thames burst its banks last year.

The council carried out repairs which caused disruption and delays for rush-hour drivers trying to cross Sonning Bridge.

David Nimmo Smith, county council cabinet member for transport, said: ?The appeal for money to raise Playhatch Road was not approved for funding. My officers will now go to the Department for Transport to find out why.?

He said the council would still carry out the work but this would mean other projects would be shelved or deferred.

The council was granted £12.8million from the Challenge Fund, which was set up last year to pay for road and infrastructure improvements.

Cllr Nimmo Smith said the money would be spent on street lighting, carriageways and drainage.
