Volunteers honoured for long service

WYFOLD Riding for the Disabled celebrated its 45th anniversary with a dinner and presentation evening at Badgemore Park Golf Club.

WYFOLD Riding for the Disabled celebrated its 45th anniversary with a dinner and presentation evening at Badgemore Park Golf Club.

More than 60 of its 80 volunteers attended the event and many were presented with long service awards.

Among them were Ruth Butler, a volunteer for more than 35 years, and Annie Wilson, who has given 30 years? service.

Mrs Butler, a teaching assistant, from Crays Pond, said: ?I still enjoy doing it after so many years otherwise I wouldn?t keep going.

?It?s so beneficial for the children. I work at Bishopswood Special School so I know how much it can help by providing some exercise. We now have a carriage with a ramp so wheelchairs can access it and I can drive it.?

Mrs Wilson, 76, from Tokers Green, said: ?I used to be an instructor but at the moment I don?t do a lot as I broke my leg last year.

?Now I sit behind the desk, take the money and chat with the clients. All my friends volunteer there and it?s one of those things where once you start we don?t stop.?

Gill Rushworth, a fund-raiser, said: ?It was good to honour people who have been volunteers for so many years. It was a very pleasant evening. Everyone had a lovely time and it was great to get together.?

The charity is based at Wyfold Court, which used to be the Borocurt Hospital, off Lime Avenue in Wyfold, and has eight horses which are used by about 75 disabled children and adults from South Oxfordshire and Berkshire.

Mrs Rushworth said: ?We aim to give disabled adults and children the opportunity to learn to drive and ride horses, to get out into the fresh air and experience the countryside. It helps riders gain self-confidence, independence and improved balance and mobility.?
