BOATS were forced to wait at Marsh Lock for four hours on Saturday morning after one of the downstream gates developed a fault.
An Environment Agency spokesman said: ?The lock could not be used until the fault was fixed as doing so risked causing additional damage which would have meant a longer, more difficult and more expensive repair.
?We got an engineer to the lock as a matter of urgency and once they arrived the gate was repaired and the lock back in service within 30 minutes.
?While the lock was out of service, queues of boats built up on both sides of the lock. We worked to clear them as quickly as possible once the lock was repaired.
?We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank our boating customers for their patience and understanding during this incident.?
