Christmas tree grower to supply Prime Minister

ONE of the most viewed Christmas trees in the country will be provided by a grower from Christmas Common after he won a competition for the third time.

The Tree Barn, which is run by Andrew Ingram and his wife Jane, will supply the tree to No 10 Downing Street after being named the British Christmas Tree Growers? Association 2015 champion with a 7ft Corkbark fir.

The Ingrams, who also won the contest in 2011 and 2013, now have the honour of choosing one of their 20ft trees for the Prime Minister and are likely to select Nordmann fir for delivery in early December.

?It will be the best 20 footer we have got in the place,? said Mr Ingram. ?After the Trafalgar Square tree, the Downing Street tree is probably the most viewed tree in the country.

?We will probably be allowed to take four people to Downing Street with the tree and we will get a tour of number 10. We?re trying to think who should go this time because I?ve been twice and Jane has been twice.

?It was a very closely contested competition ? people make a big effort to win it so to actually do it three times in succession effectively is remarkable.?

He praised his Christmas tree manager Gary Walford, saying: ?He?s the guy who looks after the trees for me. He keeps on going off to competitions and coming back with a prize! I keep saying to him ?I think we can retire now, we?ve proved our point? but Gary?s a bit more competitive!?

The winning tree was planted in 2008 when it was just 20cm tall. Mr Walford said: ?You watch it and look after it a little bit extra than the others and hope nothing damages it until it gets to the height you want for the competition.?

The tree will be on show and for sale when the Tree Barn opens for business on November 28. The shop, which sells decorations and gifts, opens tomorrow.
