Wakeboarder is sports personality of the year

A WAKEBOARDER for Great Britain has been named RAF Benson’s sports personality of the year.

A WAKEBOARDER for Great Britain has been named RAF Benson’s sports personality of the year.

Cpl Ross Phillips was presented with the award by retired Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton and Darryl Eales, chairman of Oxford United Football Club.

Cpl Phillips, whose twin brother Rich is also a wakeboarder, was selected for the national team last year and competed against professionals in Europe.

He was invited back this year and, despite an overseas deployment during training, improved his performances.

He only just missed out on a podium place at the nationals championships before taking third in the men’s masters at the Portuguese nationals.

He was eighth in the European championships, competing against four professionals, and sixth at the world championships.

Other awards including team of the year, long service to sport and coach of the year were also presented at the evening awards ceremony held in the officers’ mess at the base.

Gp Capt Simon Paterson, station commander at RAF Benson, said: “The awards are designed to recognise the contribution from personnel, regardless of the role they play in sport.

“The teamwork, discipline, professionalism and tenacity required in sport are qualities that directly transfer to primary roles.”
