A SCIENTIST and an equality campaigner from the Henley area have been recognised in this year?s New Year?s Honours.
Professor John Sumpter, from Southend, receives an OBE for services to the science of ecotoxicology in the aquatic environment.
He is professor of ecotoxicology and head of the Institute for the Environment at Brunel University, where he has worked since 1978.
Ecotoxicology looks at how toxic chemicals effect biological organisms, particularly in terms of populations, ecosystems and community.
Prof Sumpter is also an adviser to the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
Denise Wilson, from Maidensgrove, receives an OBE for services to women and equality.
She has been chief executive of the Lord Davies Women on Boards Steering Group since 2013.
The group was set up in 2011 with the goal of increasing the number of female executives in corporate companies.
Ms Wilson also chairs the Royal Academy of Arts Friend's board.
