BARBARA HELEN WERNER (née Piercy), of Butler, Pennsylvania, USA, passed away on December 4, 2015.

BARBARA HELEN WERNER (née Piercy), of Butler, Pennsylvania, USA, passed away on December 4, 2015.

She was born on August 30, 1927 in Henley to George and Eliza Piercy, of West Street, and baptised at St Mary’s Church in Hart Street.

Barbara spent her first 18 years attending school, growing up and working in Henley.

Her brothers called her Titch and her best friend called her Babs.

She loved the town and regaled many stories of her family and friends during the Second World War. Despite the horrors of the war, she thought those years were “the best times of my life”.

Barbara worked at the old cinema, where she met the love of her life, US army medical corpsman Howard E Werner in 1944. She was an accomplished singer and enjoyed the stage and theatre.

While Howard was away for the war, Barbara took classes to convert to Catholicism. The couple were married in June 1945 at Sacred Heart Church. The war had just ended and the couple stayed in England for Howard to attend the University of Shrivenham for demobilized American service  personnel.

As a GI war bride, Barbara emigrated to America in 1946 and became a US citizen in 1954.

She loved America and all her life-long friends but she was truly a Brit at heart. Not a day went by without a “cuppa”. In 2011 she and some fellow members of the Transatlantic Bridges and Parents Association posed naked for a calendar in aid of a cancer charity.

She returned to her beloved home country many times and even lived there on two occasions with Howard and the oldest children. She and Howard had 41 years together. She is preceeded in death by her husband, her parents and her siblings, Dorrie, Fred, Ivy, George and Bill.

She is survived by her children,  Darlene Geibel, Roy Werner, Kempton Werner and Christine Scheck, 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews in the US and England and friends around the world.
