OLYMPIC champion Heather Stanning has been presented with her Sue Ryder woman of achievement award.

OLYMPIC champion Heather Stanning has been presented with her Sue Ryder woman of achievement award.

The rower won sportswoman of the year in this year’s awards but was unable to attend the ceremony earlier this month because she was abroad at a training camp. She returned last week to receive her glass trophy at the Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice in Reading.

Stanning, 31, said: “Thank you very much for this award, it’s amazing. I can’t believe I was nominated, let alone to be the winner.”

Stanning, a serving officer in the Royal Artillery, and Helen Glover, her partner in the women’s pair, are training for the forthcoming European championships.

They have also qualified to represent Great Britain at the Olympic Games in Rio this summer, having won the event at London 2012, the first ever British Olympic gold medal in women’s rowing.
