Hula hoop workshop is a family affair

ABOUT 50 children and their parents attended a hula hoop workshop at Shiplake Memorial Hall.

ABOUT 50 children and their parents attended a hula hoop workshop at Shiplake Memorial Hall.

They learned to dance while rolling the hoops around different parts of their body and played a version of musical chairs in which they had to stand inside them.

The morning was led by instructor Rose Tolhurst, from Rotherfield Greys, who took up hoop dancing two years ago and now presents classes and workshops. The mother-of-two said: “Despite there being a huge online and global hooping community, there are so few hoopers in this area to connect and practise with. I wanted to reach out and help grow a community locally so I’m spreading the love for it.” She hopes that the Shiplake workshop will become a monthly event.

Ms Tolhurst will also be hosting a hoop dance weekend at the Hardwick Estate in Whitchurch, where her family runs the Tolhurst Organic Farm, in June.
