Queen’s 90th Birthday - Queen Street, Caversham

A STREET party to celebrate Her Majesty’s 90th birthday was held in Queen Street, Caversham.

A STREET party to celebrate Her Majesty’s 90th birthday was held in Queen Street, Caversham.

The cul-de-sac, off Hemdean Road, was shut on Sunday afternoon while residents set up a barbecue and played music. Children rode up and down the street on their bicycles and scribbled their names and cartoon faces on the tarmac in coloured chalk.

The event, jointly organised by residents Steve Burgess, Graham Kemp and Ruth Steggles, was almost called off due to a forecast of rain but the residents decided to press ahead. Mr Kemp said: “Ruth was the main force behind this — she was really the chief and Steve and I were just the labourers!

“There has been a great mood here today — the kids are happy and everyone’s out chatting with one another.

“The weather’s not great but I’m glad we didn’t call it off because it has gone so well.”

A street party was last held in Queen Street in June 2012 when the road was shut as residents held a community lunch to celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee.
