Queen’s 90th Birthday - Whitchurch

MORE than 100 people celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday with a picnic on Whitchurch village green.

MORE than 100 people celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday with a picnic on Whitchurch village green.

They sat on blankets or at tables under marquees while the Roy Bailey Big Band played classic jazz and swing numbers.

A balloon sculptor made models for children including swords, shields and St George flags.

Tea was served in the village pavilion along with a buffet lunch and several residents contributed cakes with a royal theme.

The event on Saturday afternoon was organised by Felipa House, of Swanston Field, and Lissie Steward, of Manor Road, with funding from Whitchurch Parish Council. Mrs House said: “I’d wanted to organise this for some time and Lissie very kindly agreed to help out.

“She has pretty much done all the work and used all her contacts to get everything together.”

Mrs Steward said: “When the band started at 3pm there were only five people here so I’m over the moon at how many people eventually showed up.

“The mood here is incredibly happy. We’ve had some ladies doing some swing dancing in front of the stage and it was definitely worth the effort.”
