Burgess shines with the bat for Harpsden

HOSTS HARPSDEN ran out winners in their friendly match with local rivals STONOR on Sunday.

HOSTS HARPSDEN ran out winners in their friendly match with local rivals STONOR on Sunday.

With Harpsden winning the toss and deciding to bat, Stonor’s opening bowlers Kavanagh and Swinburne showed good control and backed by good fielding regular wickets were taken.

Jeremy Farr took a low catch and while Kavanagh showed athleticism on the boundary to take a catch. Rowan Austin’s accurate bowling caused Harpsden’s batsmen all sorts of problems but he finished with just one wicket while Lovatt took 3-47. Burgess batted well for 55 before being trapped lbw b Swinburne as Harpsden finished on 178-9.

In reply Stonor did not start well, both openers back in the pavilion with only 14 on the board. Williams and Lovatt started the recovery before Williams was caught at deep mid-off for 19.

The middle order led by Lovatt, who was pressing his case as an all rounder, Maidlow and then Kavanagh tried to keep the run rate in check.

Good Harpsden bowling meant Stonor fell some way short of their target, despite a wall crafted 13 from Richard Hunt.
