DAVID Williams struck a maiden century to inspire PEPPARD STOKE ROW KITES to a 54-run win in a high-scoring match against HENLEY ASTROS on Sunday.
U19 duo Max Baker-Smith and Tim Kenyon gave the hosts a solid start on a good batting track, with the latter the first to fall for 29.
A diving catch at mid-off by Greg Joseph then accounted for Baker-Smith for 52 before Will Legg’s spritely cameo was ended by Rowan Austin.
Jake Leach added 51 and captain Richard Ashton smashed 30 from 11 balls before he became Richard Woolfrey’s second victim, but the end of the innings was all about Williams.
Combining the power to hit nine fours and six sixes with speed between the wickets, he reached the landmark with just two balls of the innings remaining. To cap off a momentous final over, Gary Legg was caught next ball by James Measures, the fielder running 25 yards to his right at deep mid-wicket before plucking a one-handed catch inches from the turf. Peppard Stoke Row closed on 302-6 from their 35 overs.
The Astros began in confident fashion and despite Will Legg and Will Atkinson taking a wicket apiece, raced to 95-2 after just 12 overs.
The game changed with the introduction of Gary Legg, who was aided by a fine catch at long on by Josh Perkins, the teenager then superseding his earlier effort with a direct hit run out from 35 yards.
Astros batsman Chris Maidlow — aided by Mike Woolfrey — made his first ever half century before going on to his century on the back of good shots all round the wicket.
The run rate continued to rise as the innings went on and Baker-Smith continued his fine summer with 3-13. When Ashton foxed Richard Woolfrey with a flighted off break the game was done and the Astros were dismissed for 248.

U15 Dan Bacon hit 85 as PEPPARD STOKE ROW MAHARAJAS completed a Sunday double for the club with a 53-run win against SWYNCOMBE.
The teenager struck 14 fours in his innings, and aided by Charlie Laing (30) and Aled Roberts (27), the Maharajas totalled 224 in their 35 overs.
Good opening spells from U15 Alfie Burnett (2-17) and U13 Max Roberts (1-33) kept the game in hand for Matt Kimber’s side, and the experienced Ken Sullivan turned the screw with a clever five overs which resulted in figures of 2-20. With Matt Kimber and Aled Roberts keeping things tight, Swyncombe ended on 171-6, enabling the Mahas to claim victory.
