Setback for holders

MINOR COUNTIES one-day knockout cup holders BERKSHIRE got this year’s campaign off to a disappointing start as they lost out by 59 runs against OXFORDSHIRE on Sunday.

Henley captain David Barnes won the toss for Berkshire and elected to field first at Bicester and North Oxon in the newly named Unicorns Knockout Trophy group four clash.

The hosts were dismissed for 224 with Nugent returning the best bowling figures for Berkshire of 4-43 with Williams also chipping in with 3-41. In reply the Henley opening pairing of Barnes and Michael Roberts were both back in the pavilion with just 23 runs on the board, the captain having gone for a duck.

With only four players going on to make double figures — Stephens top scoring with 47 — Berkshire were dismissed for 165.

Berkshire, who lost their opening match of last year’s campaign, are next in action on May 11 at Wargrave when they take on Staffordshire.
