In a tense match WOODCOTE defeated the only other real title Downs League Division 1 contenders, WOODHAY WOODPECKERS, by three wickets with two balls to spare on Wednesday of last week.
In a match which ebbed and flowed, Woodcote kept their nerve admirably. The Woodhay innings was never really allowed to get going by the Woodcote bowlers and, although there was some big-hitting by the visitors, wickets also fell at regular intervals.
James Bowlby made his home debut, and impressed with 3 for 18, while Mark Pearson bowled a lively opening spell and looked to be back to his best. Jonny Clark’s cameo appearance brought him a wicket while the only blot on the fielding performance was that three catches were dropped.
In reply, James Wheeler and Stefan Gordon put on 41 for the first wicket. Briefly, Woodhay took the initiative removing Paul Knox and Steve Henderson as the run rate dropped, but a couple of sixes from Jonny Clark seemed to inspire his team and with James Bowlby and James Worsfold scoring useful runs quickly it was left to Jez Mayo and Ryan Van Heerden to keep their nerve and see Woodcote over the winning line.
