BOTH innings of CHECKENDON’S season opener at FARLEY HILL followed a similar pattern on Saturday — a substantial opening stand followed by a middle order collapse and late recovery.
Vikas Chib was the star bowler for Checkendon, taking 4-17 including a hat-trick. This was backed up by three wickets for left arm spinner Harry Wickens, the last of which was a sharp caught and bowled.
Farley Hill’s total of 171 seemed well within reach during Stewart Manning and John Acland-Hood’s partnership of 55 but soon afterwards Checkendon found themselves 120-9.
Cue a dramatic last wicket stand between debutant Jack Hoyle (58 not out) and regular number 11 Rajesh Tiwari, who made six not out as 52 runs later the visitors celebrated victory by a single wicket.
