SULHAMSTEAD became the first side to beat the BERKSHIRE CRICKET LEAGUE SELECT XI in the annual champions challenge following a thrilling five-run victory on Sunday.
Sully won the toss and elected to bat but suffered an early setback when Nick Kingston removed Mark Godfrey for 5.
Chris Mercer quickly followed when he was caught behind off Tim Vines, but Marc Thompson and Aaron Briggs helped rebuild for the champions.
The introduction of Zaf Akram accounted for Thompson, and when Vines removed Jamie Seward the hosts were in trouble on 68-4. Sanjay Dove was another to come and go quickly, well caught at slip by Jason Davies off the bowling of Jeff Cluett, to leave Sully 80-5 after 20 overs.
Matt Hill (31) and Matt Gill (35) showed the depth of the champions batting line-up and a couple of lusty late blows from Craig Palmer helped his side reach 189-8 from their 40 overs. The Select XI made a disastrous start in reply, with Ian Williams (3-11 from eight overs) removing Saqib Bhatti and Tom Mackenzie for ducks.
