THE top of the Home Counties Premier League Division 1 table is tighter than ever, writes Robert MacLeish.
Banbury emerged as the current leaders as they edged home in a thrilling encounter with just two balls to spare against Gerrards Cross. With High Wycombe seeing off Aston Rowant at The Butts and Tring inflicting a second consecutive defeat on a faltering Burnham, Henley are now just a few points behind Wycombe and Tring and 19 points shy of Banbury.
All this sets up this Saturday’s visit (11am start) of Banbury to the Brakspear Ground as a crucial encounter.
Undoubtedly Banbury are a team on the move. Over the years they have always been there and thereabouts and it is surprising that they have not won the championship since the inaugural year of the league back in 2000.
This year they seem to have arrived at a good balance. They bat a long way down and possess ample bowling options.
