Record league partnership helps put side in top spot

HENLEY recorded their sixth victory of the season away at HAREFIELD to go top of Division 1 of the Home Counties Premier League on a day when the remaining teams were either washed out or had to settle for draws.

Heavy rain showers were always going to be a factor last weekend, but Harefield, the most eastward of all the grounds and Oxford to the west emerged virtually unscathed whilst deluges put paid to the games at Wycombe and Aston Rowant and resulted in a severely foreshortened game at Tring.

Winning the toss, Harefield elected to field. The hosts’ Zimbabwean overseas Chibhabha opened up from the Pavilion End supported by Evans from the far end.

Michael Roberts, playing his 100th game for Henley in the Premier League, was immediately on to the offensive against both bowlers despatching them to the boundary.

With the score on 14, David Barnes was adjudged lbw to Evans and departed without scoring. Apart from showing Chibhabha some circumspection, Roberts continued on his destructive way, now assisted by McDermott who was disappointed to be given out caught behind for 12 - Chibhabha’s only success of the day in what was, for him, a much lower key performance with the ball compared with the game at Henley.
