Henley retain league title with final day home win
HENLEY confirmed their status as this season’s Home Counties Premier League Division 1 champions with an emphatic victory over a depleted BURNHAM side at the Brakspear Ground on Saturday.
On what started as an overcast and autumnal morning, having won the toss, Henley skipper Bjorn Mordt surprisingly decided to have a bat and re-jigged the batting order to send in Matt Carter with David Barnes.
If the idea was that Carter should tee off during the powerplay, it proved short lived as Carter chipped a Zia delivery to Saddique at backward point. Michael Roberts now joined Barnes and against some variable bowling punctuated by the odd good ball, the Henley innings gained momentum.
By the end of the powerplay, Henley were 69 runs to the good. That had come at a price as Barnes was caught behind off a fairly unplayable ball and Roberts paid the price of poorly executing a sweep shot as the Burnham spinners began to extract a bit of turn and control.
Euan Brock and Dave Allaway consolidated and built for a while before Allaway was caught at slip and Brock stumped, both getting starts without going on.
