HENLEY Cricket Club have recruited three players ahead of their Home Counties Premier League Division 1 campaign which gets under way on May 11 with a home game against last season’s champions High Wycombe on May 11.
Hampshire all-rounder Hamza Riazuddin has joined the Brakspear Ground side from Falkland and Fahim Qureshi from Tring Park.
Qureshi is an impressive top-order batter, as his 773 runs last season bear witness.
However, the availability of Riazuddin along with opening batsman Michael Roberts, who is now also a full-time professional at Hampshire, will depend on their professional commitments.
Additionally Hampshire have entered into a project with Cricket Australia to take on six young Australian players this summer at the Hampshire Academy.
As part of this exercise, each player will play for a Premier League cricket club, mainly in Hampshire, but Henley have picked up off-spinner Ashton Turner from Fremantle DCC and Western Australia who has already played for Australia U19s. Last season’s overseas professional Dieter Klein will not be returning to the Brakspear Ground this season. Last season Klein was one of the league’s top 10 performers as he took 30 wickets.
Once again Henley will be led by Bjorn Mordt who has retired from playing for Berkshire.
Over the winter, the league faced mass secession of the Hertfordshire clubs but that has been averted.
There will be a change of format this season with the first five and last four matches of the season being 50/50 over win/lose games.
Meanwhile, due to clubs leaving the Thames Valley League, both Henley 2nds and Henley 3rds have retained their places in Divisions 1 and 3A respectively, despite finishing in the relegation spots last season.
Henley 2nds have a void to fill with the White bothers having retired but 2011 skipper Peter Dean looks set to return and Jason Barber will captain the side.
le_SEnSWinter nets are now being held every Sunday morning at Shiplake Collage between 9am and 11am. Anyone interested in or considering joining the club is welcome to attend.
