Mayo and Ashton in fine form

WOODCOTE got their new season off to a flying start with a 98-run friendly victory at STONOR on Sunday.

WOODCOTE got their new season off to a flying start with a 98-run friendly victory at STONOR on Sunday.

The hosts won the toss and asked Woodcote to bat but Stefan Gordon immediately went on the attack, striking a quick-fire 16 before he was bowled by Scott Harris.

Jez Mayo the top run scorer in Stonor history proved a thorn in his regular teammates’ side as he reached a well-crafted 56.

The remainder of the visitors’ top order chipped in before Richard Ashton and Paul Knox unleashed carnage in the final 12 overs.

Guest player Ashton raced to a 19-ball half-century which included five consecutive sixes before he was caught for 72 from 31 deliveries.

Knox was no less destructive and helped himself to an unbeaten 46 as Woodcote scored 159 in the last 12 overs to reach 250-6.

The hosts’ reply started poorly as Mark Pearson dismissed opener Gregor Dickie for two. Ian Harris and Ben Denton forged a useful second-wicket partnership before Steve Henderson clean bowled Harris.

Wickets fell steadily afterwards with Ashton claiming three and Fahad Saeed a pair. Jonny Clark claimed three catches as the hosts slipped to 152 all out.

The game was played in honour of Stonor clubman Tony Fisher who celebrated his 80th birthday. Fisher has been with the club for more than 50 years and continues to cut the outfield. Sir Tim Rice was among those to send messages of thanks.
