College have the edge

SHIPLAKE COLLEGE got their season off to a successful start with a 22-run victory at COKETHORPE SCHOOL.

SHIPLAKE COLLEGE got their season off to a successful start with a 22-run victory at COKETHORPE SCHOOL.

Shiplake lost the toss and were put into bat in windy conditions on a slow, green pitch but openers Jamie Westbrook (24) and Callum Boyd (15) built a patient opening stand.

The departure of Boyd brought captain Zac Jones to the crease who took on the Cokethorpe bowling attack with typical aggression.

Jones scored all around the wicket with his boundary-laden 68 including three sixes in a single over. This helped Shiplake to 151—4 from their allotted 25 overs.

The Shiplake bowlers got off to a good start, Jones taking two wickets in consecutive balls, and a third from Toby Stevens reduced the hosts to 27—3.

Tight bowling from spinners Ollie Maclaurin and Year 10 debutant Harry Ibbitson put Cokethorpe under pressure.

Further wickets from Nick Arbuckle and two from Harry Wallace accounted for the middle order. The return of Stevens (3—16), with two further wickets, and Jones (2—21) restricted the hosts to 129—8 at the end of their innings.

Elsewhere the U15As recorded a convincing four-wicket win with Dom Allen (35) and Ben Arnold (32) chasing down a total of 137. Ollie May starred with the ball taking three wickets. The U14A and B went down to narrow defeats at home.
