Bishop helps side to precious home win

STOKE ROW won their first home game since 2011 with a tense four-wicket triumph against MORETON on Sunday.

STOKE ROW won their first home game since 2011 with a tense four-wicket triumph against MORETON on Sunday.

The visitors batted first but Stuart Beeton made early inroads by dismissing Nigel Hessey and Sam Smith, the latter brilliantly caught by the bowler’s brother Chris.

Alan May toiled away at the other end and when he had Al Squires caught behind, Moreton were 17-3.

Charlie Macdonald turned the initiative back towards Moreton, striking a quickfire 26 which included two huge sixes.

Stoke Row captain Matt Kimber removed Macdonald and Howard Edwards in a tidy spell of left arm spin to leave Moreton 80-5.

Mike Stimpson played the anchor role for Moreton in making a well-crafted 46, but youngster Sam Kimber impressed with his leg spin, claiming 2-8 as Moreton closed on 140-7.

Stoke Row’s reply started slowly but it was only in the ninth over that the first wicket fell, Squires dismissing John Darnborough. Matt Kimber continued his encouraging form with 16 before he was trapped lbw by Miles.

The remainder of the Stoke Row batting line-up struggled bar Will Bishop, who played superbly in passing his half century.

A brief cameo from Richard Ashton helped the hosts near the finishing line, but it was all about Bishop as he struck a flurry of boundaries to reach 80 not out and seal victory with nine balls to spare.
