Hosts short of target at Shepherds Lane

HURLEY came off second best in a 40 over match against WOODLEY on Sunday.

HURLEY came off second best in a 40 over match against WOODLEY on Sunday.

Bert Simon won the toss and opted to bowl. A tidy opening spell from Simon, conceding only a dozen runs in five overs for the wicket of Iqbal helped keep the run rate in control for the first 10 overs. At the other end Howard Mansell was unlucky not to make his own breakthrough.

Adnan Riaz and Abdul Khaliq set up an aerial bombardment to add 121 for the second wicket. Riaz blasted the ball to all parts before Dan Masters had him caught by Matt Hampton four runs short of his century.

With a score in excess of 300 looking highly likely, Hurley did well to regain some measure of control, picking up regular wickets to restrict the visitors to 251-6.

Chasing at over a run a ball was always going to be a big ask for the home side, not made any easier when Matt Hampton fell in the second over. Jo Simon and Alan Morgans added 97 for the second wicket before Morgans, having just reached his maiden half century, was adjudged lbw to Rauf. Simon fell in the next over getting a tickle on a straight delivery from Ali, which the keeper managed to cling on to.

Debutant Richard Derry showed good technique against Ali to share in a partnership of 42 with Mike Walton. The loss of Walton led to a mini collapse with three wickets going down on 150.

Steve Taylor and David Morgans added another 22 in the last half a dozen overs to take Hurley to a respectable 172-7 at the close.
