Pakistan too hot for Harpsden in hard-fought battle

HARPSDEN lost out to THE PAKISTAN XI by 41 runs in a hotly contested 40 over game on Sunday.

HARPSDEN lost out to THE PAKISTAN XI by 41 runs in a hotly contested 40 over game on Sunday.

Winning the toss on a pitch still looking spicy from the previous day’s rain Harpsden elected to field first and started steadily with Tom Ham and Will Bevan bowling tightly.

The Pakistan XI then accelerated from 35-0 from 10 overs to the imposing position of 120-0 when the drinks arrived at 20 overs.

Harpsden fought back strongly with Ed Birkett taking the wickets of Ijaz (62) and Jaad (0) in quick succession.

This brought Harpsden some much needed momentum and when Bevan got two wickets in consecutive balls Harpsden were back in the game. The hosts managed to restrict the visitors in the second half of their innings with the only other knock of note coming from Adnan who made a steady 58.

Father and son pairing of Rod and Ed Birkett finished with three wickets apiece as The Pakistan XI finished on 202-9 from their 40 overs.

Relieved at the prospect of chasing 203 to win, when at one stage 260 looked on the cards, Harpsden started steadily in the face of good bowling from Akhtar and Qaisar.

Adam Birkett (40) and Neil Sweet (42) saw Harpsden through to 73-0 after 20 overs and at this stage Harpsden were very much in the game requiring 130 from the remaining 20 overs with 10 wickets in hand. However, excellent quick bowling from Ijaz and economical bowling from Jaad saw Harpsden lose quick wickets to slump to 99-5 from 29 overs.

A late fightback from Sam Imlay (39) kept Harpsden with a chance, but when he was dismissed by Qaisar the game was up and Harpsden finished 161 all out, a loss by 41 runs. The difference on the day was the extremely accurate and at times quick bowling from The Pakistan XI’s seven bowlers.
