Broughton gives Stoke Row the upper hand

A STUNNING century from Sam Boughton helped STOKE ROW seal a thrilling five-wicket win against local rivals NETTLEBED on Sunday.

A STUNNING century from Sam Boughton helped STOKE ROW seal a thrilling five-wicket win against local rivals NETTLEBED on Sunday.

Row captain Matt Kimber asked the visitors to bat but Nettlebed made a solid start as Rob Simmons and Ryan Latter raced to a half-century stand in the opening 10 overs.

Allan May removed Latter for 28 but the introduction of former Stoke man Chris Young saw Nettlebed take control.

Aided by Simmons (53), Young overcame a cautious start to unleash a range of fine shots all round the wicket. The pair added 102 until the former was dismissed by youngster Louis Beeton to leave Nettlebed 161-2.

Young continued on his merry way until he was eventually bowled by Boughton for 60. A late flurry of runs resulted in the visitors reaching 221-6 off their 35 overs, with Aled Roberts (2-35) the pick of the bowlers.

Stoke’s reply began in fast paced fashion as Dion Sampson blasted a quickfire 27 before Latter bowled him to leave Row 41-1. Fellow opener Matt Kimber fell shortly after when he was well caught by Charlie Ilsley at mid off.

Boughton and Stuart Beeton moved the score along to 75 before a trio of quick wickets left Row 90-5. Needing 132 from the last 13 overs, Boughton was joined by Rich Ashton and the pair dragged Row back into the game.

With 59 required off the last four overs Nettlebed remained favourites, but a stunning late assault meant Stoke claimed victory Boughton striking the penultimate ball for four to bring up his ton and seal the win.

STOKE ROW slipped to an agonising one-wicket defeat in a low-scoring thriller against HIGHMOOR on Saturday.

Row captain Matt Kimber elected to bat but disaster struck immediately as the opener was strangled down the leg side.

Allan May and Sam Boughton steadied the Stoke ship with the latter in particular impressing with boundaries all round the wicket.

May was adjudged lbw but Boughton eased to a second consecutive half century before he edged behind on 65, Row 90-3. A staggering collapse the next highest score was just six saw Stoke Row slump to 119 all out, with Rich Ashton and Dion Sampson being particularly unlucky.

Highmoor began their reply in cautious fashion but 14-year-old George Lee made the breakthrough when he trapped Taylor lbw.

A fine catch by Kimber then accounted for Malik and left the game in the balance.

Shamil was in no mood to hang around and blasted a pair of huge sixes before Kimber won the battle by having the opener caught.

The introduction of Boughton (2-20) caused further problems for the visitors as Gayan and G Wells were removed by the all rounder.

Sampson rolled back the years with a fiery spell of fast bowling and knocked back Mayers leg stump to leave Highmoor 85-7.

The experienced Moor captain Stephens took control of the situation, and although he fell at the death for 13, Harris hit the winning runs through the slips for four.
