Kayani’s knock not enough as Holyport hold on

HURLEY 1sts drew away to WHITE WALTHAM 2nds in Division 2 in a match interrupted by showers.

HURLEY 1sts drew away to WHITE WALTHAM 2nds in Division 2 in a match interrupted by showers.

Only 3.2 overs of play were possible before 2.15pm and the game continued thereafter as an 80-over contest unaffected by further precipitation.

Hurley captain Ross Brown invited the hosts to bat and opened the bowling from the clubhouse end in tandem with Jonathan Langlands.

Langlands bowled a tight spell from the far end and found the edge of Dennis Allen’s bat with the first ball of his second over which offered a catch to Phil Ridgeway low down at first slip.

Parham added 61 runs after the resumption for the second wicket with John Scott. Parham was then out to a sharp caught-and-bowled by Vikram Bhagwani.

Ben Scarborough fell soon after lbw to Ridgeway. Steve Taylor took a catch at gully following Brown’s return to the attack. Saraf Saleem came to the crease with the score on 91, and added 55 in stands for the sixth and seventh wickets during the final 12 overs. Saleem was bowled in the final over by Jack Chambers.

In reply the hosts opened the Hurley innings with the old ball with the double slow left-arm combination of Saleem and Mike Salmon.

The new ball was taken for the 24th over when Chris Mistygacz replaced Salmon. Ridgeway played a cover drive but was caught at mid-on in the third over. Varun Sharma was caught at deep mid-wicket.

Taylor and Parvinder Hunjan added 83 for the third wicket in 21 overs.

White Waltham fielded well, and the asking rate crept up to close to a run a ball. Hunjan was caught at long off by Parham in the 33rd over while Brooker followed up with the next delivery by bowling Taylor.

Langlands remained defiant at the end but Hurley finished 11 runs short of victory.

HURLEY 2nds drew their Division 3 home match with HOLYPORT 2nds in a match reduced to 70 overs that finally got under way at 2.30pm.

Andy Finlay called correctly and asked the hosts to bat first on a wicket that played well considering the amount of rain that had fallen in the previous 24 hours. Mike Finlay made the breakthrough in the fifth over when a lifting delivery brushed Mike Walton’s glove on the way through to the keeper.

A second wicket partnership of 91 between Clive Williams and Shoaib Kayani saw Hurley to their first batting point in the 16th over.

A flurry of wickets from Chris Cox reduced Hurley to 145-5 after 26 overs. Debutant Steve Wright and Scott Taylor got the innings back on track and helped ensure Hurley gained maximum batting points for only the second time this season, finishing on 212-7 from 37 overs.

Dave Walton opened the bowling but struggled to find a length, conceding 28 from two overs. Imran Arshad bowled a hostile spell of 10 overs and was unlucky to only pick up one wicket, beating the bat on several occasions without finding the edge. Dave Pollitt made the initial breakthrough when Kelvin Baillie lofted into the covers where Kayani took the catch.

Arshad got his reward when Mark Taylor lofted him to mid-on where Cameron Wright took a catch on his debut. Ajmal Ali was bowled by Pollitt in the next over.

At 64-3 Hurley were looking to press on towards victory, but Mark Francis and Andy Finlay stood firm, finishing on 199-3.
