Singh in seventh heaven

GURVEER SINGH spun BERKSHIRE to a 185-run win over HEREFORDSHIRE at Eastnor.

GURVEER SINGH spun BERKSHIRE to a 185-run win over HEREFORDSHIRE at Eastnor.

The slow left-armer who plays for Henley finished with 7-51, his best figures for the county.

Apart from the opening session on Sunday, when they lost their first four wickets for 41, Berkshire dominated the game.

Euan Brock, with 70, and Richard Logan, 60, put on 99 for the fifth wicket, while Matt Carter added 48 and Stewart Davison 36 to take their side to 266.

Herefordshire replied with 198, Logan taking 6-66, while there were two wickets apiece for Singh and Brock.

The second day’s play went perfectly for Berkshire, with everything going their way.

Having secured a first innings lead of 68, Berkshire piled on the runs with skipper James Morris leading the way with 72 off 91 balls.

Simon Macey made 56 and Harry Stephens 51 before Logan blasted an unbeaten 52 off 33 balls with four sixes and five fours.

His late flurry enabled Morris to declare on 289-6, which came off 67 overs, setting Herefordshire a daunting target of 358 to win. Logan secured an early breakthrough in the five overs left on Monday evening, and the seamer took two more early on Tuesday morning.

But the rest of the game belonged to Singh, despite the fact he was not feeling in the best of health.

He captured five wickets in the morning session at a cost of 34, with 14 of those runs coming off successive deliveries in his 12th over.

After lunch he didn’t take long to polish off Herefordshire for 172 and Singh finished with figures of 19.2-6-51-7, while Logan had 15-3-60-3.

It was Berkshire’s second successive win in the Minor Counties Championship and their sixth in all competitions.

Their next game is against Wales Minor Counties at Falkland CC starting on July 7.
