Logan rips through Shropshire line-up

BERKSHIRE pulled off an impressive win over previously-unbeaten SHROPSHIRE at Whitchurch on Tuesday to secure their third Minor Counties Championship triumph of the season.

BERKSHIRE pulled off an impressive win over previously-unbeaten SHROPSHIRE at Whitchurch on Tuesday to secure their third Minor Counties Championship triumph of the season.

Star of the show was Richard Logan with seven wickets for 101, but once again it was an excellent all-round team performance by this young side.

A sporting declaration by skipper James Morris set the hosts 281 to win in 70 overs.

Logan captured three early wickets, but captain Richard Oliver led a fine Shropshire recovery, taking them from 57-3 to 236-4. He made 102 before becoming another of Logan’s victims.

There were also two wickets for Matt Carter and one for Gurveer Singh as Shropshire were dismissed for 257 to leave Berkshire with a thoroughly-deserved 23-run win.

Logan also made the biggest contribution with the bat for Berkshire, scoring 67 out of their first-innings total of 225. Richard Morris was the next highest scorer with 33 while Shelvin Gumbs made 22.

Having lost a whole day’s play on Monday due to persistent rain, Shropshire forfeited their first innings and Berkshire batted for just over an hour on Tuesday morning before declaring their second innings on 55-1.

Shropshire, seeking a club record 11th successive win of the season, must have fancied their chances, but that was until Logan got to work.

This win leaves Berkshire fourth in the Western Division with 71 points, behind Shropshire with 91, Wales on 96 and unbeaten Cheshire on 112.

Berkshire and Shropshire meet again in the final of the MCCA Trophy at the Wormsley ground near High Wycombe on Wednesday, August 28, but before that Berkshire complete their championship fixtures against Cornwall at St Austell on August 18 to 20.
