Davison and Ranger’s heroics not enough for hosts Henley

VISITORS GREYS GREEN ran out narrow winners by just one wicket at HENLEY on Sunday.

VISITORS GREYS GREEN ran out narrow winners by just one wicket at HENLEY on Sunday.

Greys Green won the toss and put Henley into bat. After the loss of an early wicket Stewart Davison joined Peter Neville at the crease and the pair made steady progress against lively bowling from debutant Penny.

At the halfway point a middle order batting collapse saw Rooke take four wickets which left Henley all out on 171. Playing his first Sunday game of the season, Davison ended eight runs short of his century on 92 not out. In reply Greys Green looked in control at 141-4 despite a tidy opening bowling spell from Nick Johnson and Andy Chappell.

With only 30 runs needed and six wickets in hand Henley were looking at defeat but leg spinner Sam Ranger changed the course of the game with five wickets in as many overs, including that of opener Butler (74) as the visitors slipped to 165-9.

Just as it looked like Henley were going to pull off an unlikely victory Barkat Ahmed scored two consecutive fours to see Greys Green home.
