Wright leaves tourists reeling

HARPSDEN ran out 125 run winners against Derbyshire touring side SUTTON ON THE HILL at Coppid Hall.

HARPSDEN ran out 125 run winners against Derbyshire touring side SUTTON ON THE HILL at Coppid Hall.

The visitors won the toss and put the hosts into bat first and they made a shaky start with Hancock, Birkett and H Cary falling early on to leave Harpsden on 22-3.

This brought Alfred Cary to the crease to join Imlay as the pair set about rebuilding the Harpsden innings. Imlay was quick to pounce on any loose bowling as he regularly found the boundary before being bowled for 35 to end a partnership of 52 with A Cary who fell one run later for 19.

Paice and Hancock provided support to Stevens as all three batsmen accelerated the run rate with a good mix of hard hitting and smart running between the wickets, to take Harpsden towards a very good total. Late order hitting from Wright took Harpsden to 198-7 from their allocated 30 overs, with Stevens finishing one run short of his half-century.

The visitors never got going against a strong Harpsden bowling attack. Johnny Wright made regular breakthroughs, whilst at the other end Toby Stevens’ five opening overs went for just four runs. As spin was introduced, the screw was tightened even further, with Hayward picking up 4-21 from his six overs, including a leg spinning delivery to bowl Prince.

Wright was brought back into the attack and after one fruitless over, he returned in his final over to trap Day plumb in front, before re-arranging Trevatt’s stumps with the final delivery of his spell to complete his five-wicket haul.

The final two batsman negotiated the final two overs, but the match was long gone, as Harpsden wrapped up a comprehensive victory.
