Hosts fail university challenge

THE visiting READING UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC STAFF ran out winners at HAMBLEDEN on Sunday.

THE visiting READING UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC STAFF ran out winners at HAMBLEDEN on Sunday.

Having won the toss skipper Nick Arnold elected to bat first in this 40 over per side game.

Tight bowling by the visiting spinning pair of Withers and Main restricted Hambleden to 30-1 after 12 overs, the former ending up with 3-14 with his varied pace attack.

Captain Arnold was forced to play an anchor role as wickets tumbled around him. He was ably supported by Richy Alexander in a 50-run partnership and latterly by Adam Richards.

Playing his first game for Hambleden, 12-year-old Ben West scored his first ever run for the club as his side ended on 128-7.

In reply the visitors eased to the winning total inside just 23 overs. The visitors’ chief run provider was Zia with a not out score of 63. Captain Andy Eagle made 27 before being clean bowled by Alexander.

Hambleden’s only other wicket-taker was Ian Zygmunt with a sharp well taken caught and bowled to remove Carpenter.
