Former Test players at cricket club dinner

COMMENTATOR Jonathan Agnew was the guest speaker at Henley Cricket Club’s annual sportsman’s dinner.

More than 200 guests attended the event at Phyllis Court Club on Friday, which also included a fund-raising auction.

Agnew talked about his career as a bowler with Leicestershire and England before he became the BBC’s radio cricket correspondent and a commentator on Test Match Special. He spoke for more than half an hour and then answered questions from diners.

The auction, with lots including 10 days at a private island villa in Thailand, was hosted by former Warwickshire and England batsman Andy Lloyd.

The event raised more than £15,000 which will help pay off a loan from Henley Town Council that the club took out to buy its Brakspear ground in 2005. David Winter, the club’s fund-raising chairman, said: “This was our 10th sportsman’s dinner and arguably the best in terms of speaker, atmosphere and enjoyment — a really great evening.”

He thanked businesses and friends of the club who had donated auction lots.

More photos from the dinner will appear in next week’s Henley Standard.
