NEWLY promoted TAPLOW 2nds were visitors to HURLEY in the opening round of Division 2 on Saturday with the home side striding to a four wicket victory in a match that saw captain Naeem Akhtar finish with bowling figures of 7-14.

The Hurley skipper won the toss, inserted the visitors and was then rewarded second ball as Mike Cole delivered an off cutter that bowled Nick Heaton through the gate.

Lewis Fisher and Dale Barton found runs flowing especially as the sundries count increased as 60 runs were added inside 13 overs before Akhtar uprooted Barton to launch an opening spell of seven overs 3-10. Andy Mills launched a counterattack but a fierce drive to mid-off where debutant Shaan Hussein pouched the catch pegged it back to the visitors.

Fisher provided a calm head as wickets fell around him and with Barny Stay not lacking self-confidence, these two added 87 for the sixth wicket in 20 overs.

Fisher fell to Akhtar who went on to grab a hat-trick as the visitors sank from 195-5 to 199-9. Stay steered Taplow to 201-9 from their 52 overs in an innings that saw extras top score with 42.

Hurley lost the early wicket of Yasir Ali as he chopped on Rob Court in the fifth over. Hurley’s Dave Simoes dodged two beamers before he lost his footing and was stumped with the hosts wobbling on 42-2.

Shaan Hussein put 27 runs on the board before he holed out to mid-on before Akhtar and Steve Taylor added 71. Akhtar skied Barny Stay leaving Hurley with a solid platform of 125-4.

Phil Ridgeway put on 18 and it was left to Varun Sharma and I Arshad to see the hosts home with four wickets and five overs to spare.
