Travellers fall short of target at Harpsden

HARPSDEN shared the honours with visiting side TWIGWORTH TRAVELLERS on Sunday.

HARPSDEN shared the honours with visiting side TWIGWORTH TRAVELLERS on Sunday.

Harpsden were put into bat and after the early loss of Mick Greenwood and in the 18th over Justin Bradley, combined with a low scoring rate, a rebuilding process was required from Sasha Burgess and Christian Whittaker.

The duo batted with diligence that enabled the run rate to gently climb and both batsmen reached half-centuries, Burgess finally falling for 83. Ollie Brown then joined Whittaker and they put on 41 before Zac Jones and Whittaker put on 31 in three overs to enable Harpsden to declare an over early leaving the visitors 39 overs to get the required runs.

Good opening spells from James Brooks and Ian Whittaker left the Travellers slightly below the required rate but it wasn’t until Mark Cooper came on for his first bowl for Harpsden that the first wicket fell.

Two wickets from Rod Birkett and another from Cooper, thanks to a fine catch from Jones, left the Travellers in a precarious position of 72-4 and well behind the rate.

Another good spell from Jon Harris and a run out by Zac Jones brought the visitors to 120-6. The arrival of former first class player Hodson and Australian Ball was enough to stem the flow of wickets and the visiting side started to rebuild. A good four over spell from Jones ensured that the visitors were always going to struggle to win although Hodson, with a towering six off the third ball of Jones’ final over, brought the equation down to eight off the final three balls. A tight last three balls meant that honours were shared.
