Legg and Ashton put side on track for win

PEPPARD STOKE ROW KITES pulled off a 52-run win against a strong HURST side on Sunday.

PEPPARD STOKE ROW KITES pulled off a 52-run win against a strong HURST side on Sunday.

The Kites won the toss and chose to bat but suffered an early blow when Max Baker-Smith was caught at second slip off the bowling of Phil Wiggins.

Pangbourne College duo Jake Leach and Joe Holloran rebuilt the hosts’ innings, but when they both departed along with Tim Vines the Kites were 70-4.

Hurst’s spinners turned the screw as the home side fell to 121-7 after 32 overs, before a counter-attack from Gary Legg and Richard Ashton saw 99 added in the last eight overs, including 41 from the last two.

Having rattled up 220-7, the Kites applied the pressure as debutant off spinner Will Robbins and Tim Vines reduced Hurst to 37-3 after 16 overs.

Vines proved a class apart as he repeatedly made the Hurst batsman play and miss, while Robbins’ dismissal of Lewis Smith was crucial. Young leg spinner Josh Perkins and 11-year-old Dan Watts then entered the attack, and both performed admirably against a side containing seven of Hurst’s Thames Valley League Division 2B side.

Perkins also enacted a crucial run out â?? hitting one stump from 15 yards to run out White â?? before Baker-Smith, Legg and Tom Woodward sealed victory.
