Hurley slip to record defeat on their travels

HURLEY suffered a club record 272 run defeat away to COOKHAM DEAN on Sunday.

HURLEY suffered a club record 272 run defeat away to COOKHAM DEAN on Sunday.

The hosts won the toss and opted to bat first. Both openers were back in the hutch inside four overs as Scott Taylor and Cameron Wright had early successes.

This proved to be a false dawn for Hurley as the big hitting Mangatt and Richardson proceeded to deposit the ball to all parts of the ground and beyond with a partnership of 189 in 17 overs.

None of the bowlers escaped the carnage on a wicket that offered little help. A couple of difficult chances going begging didn’t help the Hurley cause but they kept at their task. Steve Taylor broke the partnership thanks to a fine catch by his son Scott to dismiss Mangatt.

Richardson took over the lead and duly reached his century before falling to Shoaib Kayani. Hurley used eight bowlers and managed to slow down the onslaught with Ben Fraser and Jordan Barradell-Pither picking up a wicket before Cookham Dean finished on 351-6 from their 40 overs.

The Hurley reply started in positive fashion and after three overs they were actually in front of the required rate as Kayani and Stephen Wright looked to pounce on anything loose.

They suffered a setback in the fourth over when Barratt re-arranged Wright’s wickets. Kayani edged Barratt to the keeper at 60-2 in the 10th over. Steve Taylor made 22 before lofting John Smith to Lucas at mid off.

The loss of Taylor signalled the beginning of the end for the Hurley innings with none of the remaining batsmen managing more than three, as the last seven wickets went down for only a dozen more runs in the seven overs, leaving the visitors 272 adrift.
