Harpsden edge close encounter

HARPSDEN ran out winners in a closely fought match at TURVILLE PARK on Sunday.

HARPSDEN ran out winners in a closely fought match at TURVILLE PARK on Sunday.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first. Proceedings started badly for Harpsden as Tom Mitchell was run out in the second over followed by Adam Birkett being caught behind shortly afterwards.

Ian Brown batted well for his first career half century and was ably supported by debutant Jack Roddan who put on a vital partnership.

Wickets fell at regular intervals with tight bowling from N Runkel who was the pick of the bowlers picking up four wickets. Will Bevan had an important cameo at the end to push Harpsden up to a below par 172.

In reply Turville looked well set with James Hunt at the crease until he got the ball of the match from Johnny Wright being bowled.

Wickets fell regularly with no Turville batsman going on to make the big score needed. This was thanks to good all-round performances from the Harpsden bowlers.

With 17 overs to go and Turville Park nine wickets down, Harpsden looked certain for victory.

N Runkel and N Henry had other ideas with Henry playing some big shots mixed with watchful batting and with one over to go, looked like they would hold on for the draw.

Skipper Adam Birkett eventually bowled Henry with three balls to spare meaning that Harpsden took the spoils.
