Openers pile on the runs for Hambleden

HAMBLEDEN ran out 107-run winners against MEDMENHAM at the Dene on Sunday.

HAMBLEDEN ran out 107-run winners against MEDMENHAM at the Dene on Sunday.

The hosts won the toss and elected to bat. With rain threatening, openers Rosier and McDonough set about building a partnership, dispatching the opening bowlers Bagwell and S Baxter for 31 runs by the sixth over. Barclay, then Vaughan, came into the attack to no avail as Hambleden reached 96 without loss after 17 overs, at which point rain halted play for a while.

A Bussell replaced Barclay and bowled tightly, eventually being rewarded with the wicket of Rosier (91, caught Bagwell), to close the opening partnership on 184.

Within three overs Arnold was bowled by Bussell, who finished with 2-46, and Unwin was run out. McKean and McDonough put on a further 20 runs before McDonough was bowled by S Baxter on 96. Holloway joined McKean and the pair took the total to 228 when Holloway was stumped on the final ball of the innings.

After tea, Hambleden took to the field intent on defending their total. Opening bowler Adam Richards’ second ball clean bowled P Baxter for a golden duck.

At the other end Mattingley bowled economically, taking 3-20 off his seven overs. Medmenham were close to the run rate and G Bagwell was settling in on 22 until he was superbly run out by Sanders from close to the mid-on boundary.

Sanders and Ottaway then took up the baton with Ottaway bowling Vaughan on 32 and wicketkeeper P Richards taking a catch to dismiss Bussell for 10.

Not to be outdone Sanders had Barclay caught by Adam Richards at point and with his next ball bowled Goosen. S Baxter survived the hat-trick ball but in the 29th over S Bagwell became the final victim when Arnold’s fourth ball of his only over took an inside edge and was caught by keeper Richards.
