Burgess and Mitchell hit half-centuries in close encounter

HOSTS HARPSDEN triumphed in a closely-fought match at home to WOODCOTE on Sunday.

HOSTS HARPSDEN triumphed in a closely-fought match at home to WOODCOTE on Sunday.

Harpsden won the toss and elected to bat first on a good wicket. Proceedings started poorly though for the home side as Woodcote took two quick wickets to leave Harpsden on the back foot thanks to tight opening spells from Pearson and Bell.

Sasha Burgess and Tom Mitchell put on a 110 run partnership as they built an innings around watchful batting and fine stroke play to both reach half centuries. However, they could not push on after and this sparked a collapse from 146-2 to 193 all out just short of their 40 overs.

In reply the visitors started well reaching 50 without loss until a fine piece of fielding by J Harris led to the run out of Crawford. Woodcote kept losing wickets at crucial times with no one being able to hang around with Gordon.

With Woodcote at 110-6 off 25 overs, things looked good for Harpsden until Stroker came in with a quick fire 38 which put the visitors in the driving seat just needing 20 off seven overs with three wickets remaining.

Two quick wickets from juniors Mathew Stanley and Max Martin meant 12 runs were needed for the last wicket. J Aldridge was the set batsman on 28 and got the deficit down to six before a fine cut to deep cover led to a poorly judged second run and a fine throw from Sasha Burgess from the boundary led to the last wicket.
