HENLEY GIRLS U13s progressed to the third round of the Lady Taverners T20 national competition thanks to a 34-run win against RICHMOND U13s on Saturday.
Richmond won the toss and elected to bowl. Henley skipper Nicola Lee and Jemma Swire-Thompson played patiently and positively on what transpired to be a slow outfield. Once settled, the boundaries began to come for Lee and this partnership lasted for 12 overs when, with wickets in hand, Swire-Thompson tried to hit big but fell to a straight one.
Henley lost three more wickets in quick succession from some solid Richmond bowling and quick fielding. Undaunted by Richmond’s growing confidence, Eliza Stone joined Lee in the 15th and the pair ran numerous quick singles and punished the bad balls with both reaching the boundary at regular intervals. Henley finished their innings on 126-4. Henley openers Sophie Jordan and Eliza Stone bowled some tight overs with Stone taking the first Richmond wicket in the fourh over with the aid of a catch at point from Francesca Clarke.
First change bowler Lauren Hilditch, aged just 10, bowled with good pace and line and length and was rewarded with her first wicket thanks to the safe hands of Lee. Two balls later, Hilditch went on to clean bowl the Richmond skipper leaving them looking unsteady on 23-3 after seven overs.
The Richmond run rate picked up over the next few overs but tight bowling from Jordan, Stone and Hilditch kept Henley firmly on track for a win. Hilditch’s accurate bowling was rewarded with a further two wickets, both clean bowled and Richmond finished short of their target by 34 runs. Henley girls will play either West Ilsley or Ballinger Waggoners in the next round.
