Crazies Hill get season off to winning start

CRAZIES HILL won their opening match of the season by three-wicket win at FAWLEY on Sunday.

CRAZIES HILL won their opening match of the season by three-wicket win at FAWLEY on Sunday.

The hosts began aggressively against Searle and N Pritchard-Gordon, scoring at almost eight an over. However, once Searle had bowled Waller and E Unwin had retired, scoring was gradually brought under control — the spin of D Simpson and Margrie proving difficult to score freely against.

Crazies began to exert control as Simpson trapped Coombes lbw for 2 and, after some lusty blows, Turner was well caught by the diving Stuart off Magrie for 21.

Wilson joined Butterworth at the crease and began to rebuild the Fawley innings, before Simpson bowled Butterworth. Despite Wilson continuing to look untroubled, wickets fell at the other end with Hanton removing Maskell and Noyes taking the wicket of Rosier thanks to good catches from R Simpson and Pritchard-Gordon respectively.

When Hanton bowled T Pritchard-Gordon shortly after, the hosts were struggling to post a competitive score. However, Wilson and the returning Unwin moved the score on to 186, before Montgomery finished off the innings thanks to Stuart’s second catch of the day.

Crazies opened their reply with intent, as R Simpson and Noyes scored 36 off the first five overs. They then lost three quick wickets as first Noyes holed out off Rosier, N Pritchard-Gordon was trapped lbw first ball and Montgomery lofted a simple catch to Maskell off Turner leaving the visitors 45-3.

After riding his luck, against some accurate bowling from T Pritchard-Gordon, M Simpson began to find his form and together with his son, Reiss, and then with Stuart, rebuilt the innings and laid a solid foundation for the lower middle order. Once he retired and Stuart was bowled by T Pritchard-Gordon, Blythe and Hanton fell shortly thereafter to leave Crazies still needing 35 to win with only three wickets remaining.

Crazies’ nerves were soon calmed as Margrie and Searle were seldom troubled by the Fawley attack, comfortably seeing the visitors to victory, secured when Searle despatched Turner for six over square leg.
