DURHAM’S Andrew Carpenter became the first player to retain the Smokey’s Cup following the two-day tournament

DURHAM’S Andrew Carpenter became the first player to retain the Smokey’s Cup following the two-day tournament held at Phyllis Court last Friday and Saturday.

Carpenter beat Guildford’s Chris Heath by one clear game win, with Cheltenham’s Klim Seabright and Brian McCausland from Nailsea, a further win behind in third and fourth places respectively.

In all 16 players competed from 10 clubs, which included four from the host club. Phyllis Court’s Richard Peperell won eight of his 14 games, Raghu Iyer won six, Don Rutherford four and probably the pick of the bunch was Dianne Browne’s five wins from 15th seed position, including her victory over top seed McCausland.

The tournament was part of the National B-Level Series of 19 events that culminates in a final for all event winners, which will this year be at Budleigh Salterton in October.
