GOLF Croquet training of 21 new players took place over two weeks last month at the Phyllis Court Croquet Club with several players competing in the first two tournaments of the year.
In their opening game of the season at High Wycombe in the first round of the Murphy Shield, the Phyllis Court team of Frances Colman, Hugh Crook, Roger Goldring and Raymond Wood ran out 5-2 winners.
At the Sidmouth Golf Croquet Open Championships, Phyllis Court came away with three of the top places for the first time ever at the national championship level.
At only his second appearance at this level Roger Goldring was victorious against much higher ranked opponents and won his block. He then won his quarter-final before being beaten by Tom Weston in a timed semi-final.
Getting to this stage gave Goldring a good chance of qualifying alongside Chris Roberts for the English National Singles Championship (Ascot Cup) finals at the end of the season.
Helena Fensome had a disappointing first day and failed to qualify in the top half ‘cut’. However, she bounced back to win the consolation plate. Roberts won all his knock out matches and peeled Tom Weston through hoop 11 to retain the Haste Cup.
