Cyclists raise £1,600 for charity in memory of rider

MORE than 50 cyclists from Henley took part in a charity ride.

The fourth annual ride organised by the GS Henley Cycling Club raised £1,600 for Sue Ryder.

The event is held in memory of Graeme Taylor, a former club member, who was cared for by the charity before his death from cancer in 2021.

The cyclists rode either 40km, 50km or 65km, all starting and finishing at Henley Rugby Club in Marlow Road. There was free cake after the ride and a chance to meet Bill Pollard and Matt Richardson, who recently rode penny-farthings to Paris for a cancer charity.

The Graeme Taylor Prize for the most inspirational rider went to Adam Hale, who cycled on an Eighties bike dressed in cycling gear from the era. He won a penny-farthing lesson.

GS Henley co-chair Paul Hartland said: “We had more than 50 riders plus several others who supported the post-ride activities. The majority were club members but we had a significant number of non-members and a good response from Reading Cycling Club.

“The day went well. There was a light shower but that did not affect the ride and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

“I did a part of one of ride and then turned around to greet cyclists arriving back.

“We set up a marquee outside the rugby club. We had cakes for the riders and plenty to go around.

“We stayed for about three hours after the rides. It gave the riders a chance to get together. There was also a raffle with a chance to win Le Col cycling jerseys and hats, sports massages and more.”

Mr Hartland added: “The event is a celebration of cycling as Graeme enjoyed it and was a keen rider but also of the social aspect.

“It is not just about getting the best time but coming together and sharing the sport that we all love.”
