AS readers will probably know, the Duke of Westminster died last month, leaving his estimated £9billion fortune to his 25-year-old son.
But what you may not know is that the Duke’s widow, Natalia Phillips, grew up in Checkendon.
She was the youngest daughter of Lt Col Harold Phillips and his wife Georgia Werner, who lived at Checkendon Court.
Writing in the village newsletter, Robert Lobley says Mrs Phillips was a lifelong friend of the Queen and the family was visited by the royals a number of times.
Natalia Ayesha married the Duke in 1978 and became godmother to Prince William.
She is related on her mother’s side to George II as well as the Russian royal family.
Robert says that even though she lived in the big house, Natalia was popular and friendly with young people in the village.
