Election sniping

WITH elections looming, some Henley town councillors just can’t resist a dig at their political opponents.

At a meeting of the town and community committee, Deputy Mayor Ken Arlett told colleagues that the town’s buses were looking fuller than ever since the weekday service was extended to Saturdays last month.

Councillor Arlett, a member of Henley Residents Group, joked that this was down to the way that Henley’s Conservative MP John Howell had cut the ribbon at the official opening.

Councillor Will Hamilton, a Conservative, replied: “I’m surprised you’d know about that considering that you didn’t turn up.”

When Cllr Arlett replied that he had been attending another civic engagement, Cllr Hamilton asked: “Was that on the golf course?”
