THE recent deaths of Tony Lane and Bob Crow, left-wing leader of the RMT union, led to some banter among the former’s successors on Henley Town Council.
Councillor Ian Reissmann, a member of the ruling Henley Residents’ Group, began last week’s meeting of the finance committee by asking Conservative opposition councillor Will Hamilton if he was going to propose a minute’s silence for Mr Crow. HRG colleague Pam Phillips then chipped in: “He has got the same haircut.”
However, rather than allowing himself to be drawn in, Cllr Hamilton responded: “I am sure you will be having a silence for Tony Lane.”
Cllr Reissmann confirmed that a silence was indeed planned for the next meeting of the full council, which is the same date as Mr Lane’s funeral — April Fool’s Day!
