‘Personal’ politics

COUNCILLOR David Nimmo Smith took offence at a comment made when he and colleagues on Henley Town Council’s finance committee were deciding which good causes to give grants to.

The Henley Synchronised Swimming Club had asked for £295 but Cllr Nimmo Smith said he was unwilling to agree that. Noting that he had earlier supported giving a grant to Henley Rugby Club, Councillor Jeni Wood asked whether his decision was due to the sychronised swimmers not playing with a ball.

Cllr Nimmo Smith said this was a “personal” remark but chairman Ian Reissmann responded: “I didn’t hear a personal remark and I’m sure one wasn’t made.”

The swimming club’s application was recommended for approval.
